Chat: channels, messages and threads
Talk in channels, direct messages and threads, then put what was said on a board or start a session from it.
On this page
Chat is where work starts. A channel belongs to a workspace and is for a team or a topic. Direct and group messages are between people in your organization. When a conversation reaches a decision, a task or a question, put it on a board in two taps; when it needs a meeting, start a session from it and the board is drafted from what was said.
Channels and direct messages
- Choose Chat in the sidebar. Channels are listed first, then direct and group messages. A number shows what is unread; an orange one means someone mentioned you.
- Browse channels shows every public channel in a workspace. Choose Join to take part, or open one to read it first.
- New channel makes one in a workspace you can edit. A private channel is only for the people you add.
- New message starts a direct message with one person, or a group message with several.
- Everyone in a channel can post, viewers included: talking is not editing.
Writing
- Enter sends and Shift Enter starts a new line. Type @ to mention someone; they get a notification.
- Attach files and photos with the clip, or paste them. Record a voice note with the microphone and press stop to attach it.
- Hover over a message, or tap it, for its actions: react, reply in a thread, put it on a board, edit or delete your own.
- Edited messages say so. A deleted message leaves Message deleted behind so its thread still reads.
Threads
Reply in thread keeps a side conversation together without filling the channel. The message shows how many replies it has and who answered; choose it to open the thread beside the conversation.
Put a message on a board
- On a message, choose Put on a board, then decision, task, question or idea.
- Pick the session whose board gets it, or make a new session. Edit the title if the message says more than the item needs.
- Choose Put it on the board. The message shows a link to the item, and the item links back here.
On the board, an item that came from chat shows Where this was discussed in its details: the message and the conversation around it, so anyone can find the reasoning behind a decision.
Start a session from a conversation
Choose Start a session in a channel's header, or from a thread. Round Table drafts the board from the recent messages (or the thread), creates the session and posts its link in the conversation so everyone can join. Hold the call there, then choose Write from this session for the minutes: the conversation, the session and the document stay connected.
Catch me up
Back after a while? Choose Catch me up in a channel. You get what was decided, what was asked and who asked you something, with numbers that jump to the messages they come from. When AI is available on your site it writes the summary; otherwise you get the messages that mention you, the most reacted and the newest.
Notifications
- Direct and group messages notify you once, until you read them.
- Channels notify you when someone mentions you. In a channel's menu, choose Every message, Mentions only or Nothing.
- Mention emails follow your Mention emails setting.
Messages are kept until someone deletes them. Workspace admins can delete any message in their workspace's channels.
